Epsom Hospital Update
New Campaign Group Established
A new campaign steering group has been established to spearhead efforts in mid-Surrey to convince the NHS that Epsom is the best location for its proposed new acute hospital. The Group draws together representatives from the County Council, local boroughs and districts, local MPs, business groups, doctors and volunteers involved with the hospital and local healthcare.
The Group will serve as a focal point for a widespread campaign to secure the future of Epsom Hospital and to fight to ensure that any proposed changes by the NHS do not undermine other services in mid-Surrey.
The NHS is planning to take its final decision on the sites for the proposed new acute hospital and network of local care centres by the summer.
Epsom and Ewell MP Chris Grayling said the next few weeks would be "crucial in the battle to maintain services at Epsom". He said the Group would be challenging the NHS over what he called "huge weaknesses in its current plans." He said: "If the NHS goes ahead with a totally new hospital in Sutton it will mean cuts of £20 million a year in other services. This would be utterly unacceptable, when there is a more cost-effective option available at Epsom."
