Epsom Hospital Update
Hospital Campaign Update - February 2007
The NHS has decided not to press ahead with the proposed transfer of maternity services from Epsom to St Helier at the moment, as it can't afford to make the necessary investment in a bigger unit at St Helier. There are now also increasing uncertainties about the future of St Helier Hospital, which is under threat from a review of hospital services in South West London.
Meanwhile it looks certain that the NHS will publicly abandon the plan to build a new critical care hospital within the next couple of months. With hospitals in both London and Surrey under threat from closure from reviews taking place at present, it is inconceivable that a new investment will take place in our area. An updated report from the Better Healthcare Closer to Home team is expected in the next few weeks.
We are now not expecting major changes to be announced until the spring, when the London and Surrey reports will be published. The steering group heading the campaign for Epsom Hospital is planning activities to raise the temperature about the future of Epsom to coincide with the publication of those reports.
