Employment minister and Epsom MP Chris Grayling addressed local businesses at the launch of Reigate and Banstead Council’s Young Workers Scheme on 13 January. He spoke about the problem of youth employment in today’s economic climate and the policies the Government is adopting to tackle this issue.

This is the second Young Workers scheme that Reigate and Banstead Council has implemented, targeting people aged under 24 who have been unemployed for 6 months or longer. The council has invested £60,000 in the scheme with 41 young workers recruited to date.

“It is fantastic to see local councils actively trying to reduce the problem of youth unemployment,” said Chris.

“This initiative is one which has already proved successful in giving young workers the skills and confidence to find jobs and I am delighted to launch the council’s second scheme.”

“We have thousands of intelligent, talented, young individuals is this country who are finding it hard to get a foot on the job ladder. Schemes like this are invaluable in giving young people a place to start.”
